Your Own African Paradise: Thanda Private Game Reserve
Hluhluwe, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa ~
"When we arrived at the main Thanda lodge to see a herd of elephants and their babies
lumbering off away from a large water feature at the entrance, I knew we were at a
very special place."
View from The Bed
After a warm welcome from the staff, we were shown through the beautiful African inspired guest area to the chalet we’d call home for the next three nights. Completely secluded, it was nothing short of our own private paradise in the bush. Designed to resemble a typical thatch African hut, it opened to reveal a beautifully appointed interior with a luxurious (and extremely comfortable) four-poster bed. The bedroom opened out onto a wooden deck with our very own infinity plunge pool. Boasting an elevated view over the African plains we were told to my delight that occasionally, elephants came to sip water from the pool. Sadly we weren’t lucky enough to experience this.
To the right, the deck led to a gazebo sheltering a day bed, where we’d laze, reading our books with nothing but birds for company. Back inside the surprisingly spacious unit, the stunning ensuite bathroom offered the usual as well as a big tub, his and hers sinks, a huge inside shower and an even bigger outside one. On the other side of the unit was a lounge area with a fully complimentary bar fridge, tea station and snacks. If it wasn’t for the animals, we would not have left the chalet during our stay.
Tub With A View
Morning and evening game drives were conducted by our personal game ranger, Morné, who was lovely and very knowledgable. The open air viewing vehicle was a little old and shabby, but it did the job. Due to recent and much needed rains, the bush was lush and abundant, which unfortunately didn’t make for great viewing visibility. That said, we were still treated to sightings of lion, elephants, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog, a multitude of birds and even a rock python. My personal highlight was watching hyenas at their den with their two week old cubs. A once in a lifetime viewing experience. Back at the lodge, the food was a delicious mix of traditional hotel fare with an African twist: think the likes of ostrich carpaccio and kudu fillets.
Thanda also offers luxury tented facilities, but we don’t regret our decision to opt for the air-conditioned ultracomfort of the chalets – it’s hot! All in all, for rest and relaxation in your own African paradise, few places compare to Thanda.
