Paarl Winelands

The Spice Route

ippA day at the Spice Route is guaranteed to be a sensory splendor. Situated in the Paarl Winelands overlooking the spectacular panoramic views of Table Mountain, Simonsberg Mountain Range and the Paarl Winelands, the Spice Route offers

an experience that is unique to the wine and hospitality industry. The Spice Route hosts a collaboration of artisans who display their produce and share their knowledge and passion with the public. The relaxed atmosphere, friendly people and the variety of things to do and see, makes it a great place to visit when with family and friends.

ippWe started with the culinary scene and made a stop at the Bertus Basson Spice Route Restaurant. Here, we were spoilt by a great selection of traditional South Africa cuisine with hints of European and Eastern influences, accompanied with award winning Spice Route wines. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery, we savored every mouthful, enjoyed the fine wines on offer, and relaxed under shade of the big oak trees.

There was a huge selection of works on display. Each piece was exquisite; the variety of colours used and the abstract formations that are created in this studio, are incredible. A nice touch to the studio was that you could watch the artist in action!

ede80667edffa09cf04e4208a845818aippOur next stop was the Cape Brewing Company (CBC) – the men were in their element! Here you are able to taste a selection of beers (made from only the finest ingredients) at the various tasting stations, while viewing the facilities and following the entire beer production process. We then did a quick stop in at the Barley & Biltong Emporium, a Beer Garden with a local twist. Here you can indulge in all the beer and biltong you want while enjoying the fine scenery and relaxing in the company of friends and family.

For the wine lovers, there is the Spice Route Tasting Room where one can enjoy a variety of award-winning wines in the rustic underground tasting room or outside under the pergola. We indulged in a lovely glass of wine while sitting on the grass and soaking up the sun.

We then made our way to DV Artisan Chocolates – “one of the few ‘Bean to Bar’ micro batch chocolatiers in the world”.  Here they have a standard chocolate tasting as well as a chocolate and wine pairing on offer. We opted for the standard chocolate tasting and thoroughly enjoyed it. Before leaving, we were sure to purchase a bar or two!

ippWe then continued on to the little art gallery. Upon entering, there were two or three children taking part in a painting activity, which created a lovely atmosphere while we browsed through the artwork and books on display.

After our stop at the gallery, we wondered across the lawns and stopped in for an ice-cream at the DV Cottage Café. By this time it was edging towards closing time so we made a few quick stops to check out the Wilderer Distillery and La Grapperia, with our last stop being The Trading Company, where we bought a trinket or two.

There is so much to do and see and will most definitely be back for round two. If you are up for a day of sensory splendor and appreciate authenticity and superb craftsmanship, then a day at the Spice Route is highly recommended!
