Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

The NEXT STOP, AFRICA team decided to embark on a little excursion to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden to get a first had experience on what this famous garden has to offer.

On arrival we decided to have a bite to eat

at the well-known Moyo Restaurant. With a short leisurely stroll from the entrance we found the restaurant in the most idyllic setting. We enjoyed some modern African cuisine on the outside veranda and took in the spectacular view of the garden. What a lovely, relaxing experience! After lunch we took to the gardens…

Well, let’s just say, if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Kirstenbosch Garden is the place to go. Entering the garden there was an immediate sense of peace and tranquillity. We meandered up the winding paths, walked through an avenue of camphor trees and lay on the lush grass. Being surrounded by the unique and incredibly diverse flora of the Cape with the backdrop of Table Mountain National Park was absolutely breath-taking.

We then advanced to ‘The Boomslang’, which is a Tree Canopy Walkway and newly added feature to the Kirstenbosch Garden. The walkway is 130m long and takes you through the tree tops of the Arboretum section of the garden. The 360 degree view from the walkway is magnificent to say the least.

On our way back down the gardens we were fortunate enough to stumble upon a pair of nesting owls. What an amazing thing to see. The male was perched on a branched watching over his nesting mate on the big boulder below.

We ended our walk through the garden with a quick viewing of the conservatory where we saw a beautiful selection of succulents and bulbous plants home to the Cape Floral Kingdom. We also got to see some impressive bonsai trees, one of which was aged 150 years old!

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is certainly one of the most beautiful scenes South Africa has to offer . So, from the Next Stop, AFRICA team we highly recommend a visit!
